2017 Norfolk Open & Professional Championships

Thetford were hosts for the Norfolk Open & Professional Championships of 2017.

The course was in magnificent condition and a field of 69 players looked forward to 36 holes of strokeplay to determine the Norfolk Professional Champion and the Norfolk Open Champion. The day did not disappoint.

For the Professionals, the morning round saw Ben Rawsthorne of Bawburgh return a gross 69 with fellow Professional Tom Maxwell of Wensum Valley close behind on 70 and Nic Cains of Swaffham one further back.  The stage was set for the afternoon and Mark Spooner of Bawburgh delivered an early 69 taking him up the leader board.  Neil Lythgoe of Royal Norwich with a 71 also moved up the field and the ever present Ian Ellis with a 72 followed suit. However, Nic Cains of Swaffham fired a 2 under par 70 to take the early lead only to be outgunned by Ben Rawsthorne, the morning round leader posting a superb second round score of 70 leaving him 5 under par on the day with a total of 139 and with it the title of Norfolk Professional Champion 2017.

The Open was an altogether different affair with many of the County’s leading amateurs in the field. Jack Yule of King’s Lynn with a gross 70 (2 under par)  took the lead in the morning round, closely followed by Tommy Hunt of Gt Yarmouth & Caister, Giles Evans of Thetford and James Flesher of Sprowston Manor. The afternoon round saw much movement with Iain Yule, father of Jack push through the field with a level par 72 and other notable players did likewise with Mitch Smith of Royal Cromer carding a 74 and Giles Evans of Thetford a 76. All of this did nothing to apply pressure to Jack and he followed his excellent morning round with a fantastic second round of 67 (5 under par)  giving him a total of 137 and finishing the day at 7 under par and the title of the 2017 Norfolk Open Champion. As if that wasn’t sufficient, Jack also took the Henry Craske Salver as the leading Amateur in the County Amateur Championships combined with the  Norfolk Open Championships. A great day for the young England Star.
