Congratulations to Eaton Golf Club who, in a close and competitive final, overcame tough opponents from King’s Lynn to win the Myhill Trophy for the first time since 1997.
Played in a great spirit of friendly rivalry, the final was held at Mattishall Golf Club, winners of this competition in 2023, and thanks go to Matt Gardner, Oli Underhill-Smith and the team for their hospitality and a well-presented course.
In the first of the morning matches, Iain Yule and Mark Butt of King’s Lynn staged an amazing fightback against Eaton’s Nic Sperrin and Neil Harrison. Yule and Butt were 4-down after four holes, and the score was unchanged after nine, but some great play on the inward holes saw them finish 1-up. It was, however, Eaton who took the morning honours, with the other three pairs winning all their matches for an overall lead of 6-holes.
Although there was a little rain whilst the players had lunch, it had mostly cleared by the time they restarted and the sunshine brought out some golf of the highest standard.Â
History repeated itself in the first match as Sperrin and Harrison won the first 4 holes, only for Yule and Butt to fight their way back to win 1-up … again.Â
All the afternoon matches were well fought, with Eaton only 2-up at the turn. As holes ran out for King’s Lynn, it was Eaton who secured victory with wins again from the three remaining pairs, helped significantly by Karl Pitcher and Louis Cini winning 5-up, adding to their morning success of 3-up.
All of this meant that Eaton finished with an overall winning margin of 14-holes. The trophy and medals were presented by County Secretary, Peter Johns.
