Thetford Golf Club hosted the 2019 semi-finals and final on what proved to be a very difficult day for golf. The County was very fortunate to have Thetford Golf Club as its venue. The free-draining course was ideally suited to the many deluges the day threw at it.

The morning semi-finals were contested between King’s Lynn and Royal Norwich 2. Both sides fielded players with County experience and the contest was very close with Royal Norwich running out winners by 3 matches to 2:

Results (King’s Lynn first)
K Heath halved with S Ballinghall
I Yule beat P Reade
M Bernstein lost to S Tidy
J Wysoczanski halved with S Nicholls
R Jessop lost to B McQuade

The second semi-final was contested between Great Yarmouth & Caister and Bawburgh. Again, both sides fielded strong teams with County experience and the headline match between County captain Clarke and County Amateur champion Cullington did not disappoint as with the first semi-final this was again decided by one match with Great Yarmouth & Caister winning by 3 matches to 2.

Results (Great Yarmouth & Caister first)
S Clarke beat J Cullington
T Hacon lost to J Keely
S Hobbs beat G Clarke
K Green lost to H Brister
T Rutherford beat J Weeds

The final between Great Yarmouth & Caister and Royal Norwich 2 was a battle between the players and the rain which came down in epic proportions and there was one suspension. Despite all of this the standard of golf was excellent and golf was the winner.

Congratulations fell to Royal Norwich 2 with a 3½ to 1½ victory. Non-playing captain Adrian Myhill thanked Thetford Golf Club and Steven Lock for staging the event and another successful competition. Special thanks to Thetford President Richard Goodenough for his support all day and referees Pam and Derek who were instrumental in getting the players around the course.

Scores (Royal Norwich 2 first)
S Ballinghall lost to S Clarke
P Reade beat T Hacon
S Tidy beat S Hobbs
S Nicholls halved with K Green
B McQuade beat T Rutherford

2018 Cullington Cup - Final

I came, I saw, I etc etc

2018 Cullington Cup Final – Also hosted by Swaffham Golf Club this match was the culmination of a hard-fought season and saw Costessey Park take on King’s Lynn for the Championship. In the morning games Costessey Park raced to an early lead and by lunch time enjoyed a 7 hole margin.
King’s Lynn were clearly inspired by the lunch and overcame the deficit and were enjoying a great resurgence, taking the lead. Back came Costessey Park and the match by the end of the afternoon round finished all square on the day. A play-off was the order of the day with both teams choosing their best pairings to go off for a sudden death playoff. A tense affair with no quarter asked or given. The game and the match was decided on the first extra hole with Costessey Park taking the ‘laurel leaves’ of the Cullington Cup Champions for 2018. A truly epic contest well fought and a credit to both teams.

2018 Myhil Trophy - Final

Smiles, smiles, smiles...........

2018 Myhill Trophy Final between Gt Yarmouth & Caister and Bawburgh was held at Swaffham Golf Club and what a day….. the course was present in excellent condition and the greens were running true and fast.

The final over 36 holes saw the morning foursomes start tentatively with both sides edging ahead, first one then the other. After the first 18 holes, Bawburgh went in for lunch leading by 2 holes and hoping for a repeat performance in the afternoon. Gt Yarmouth & Caister were not left wanting and started off with an early lead in the first game and the third game but Bawburgh held their nerve in games two and four making steady progress towards their goal. The match was played in great spirit with both teams offering some quality golf for the many spectators who turned out to be entertained. They were not disappointed. The match concluded with Bawburgh increasing their overall margin and went on to become Myhill Trophy Champions for 2018 by a total of 8 holes.

Both teams can be very proud of their achievement in reaching the final. They each played Four pairs, Five matches of 36 holes covering over 720 holes in all, so to everyone, well done.

2018 Scratch Knock-Out Finals

Hunstanton strike...

Richmond Park hosted the 2018 Scratch Knock-out Finals in splendid style.
The morning semi-finals saw Hunstanton take on Eaton and Costessey Park face Dunston Hall.
The Hunstanton v Eaton match was a close affair with Hunstanton coming out on top with a 4 games to 1 victory.
Costessey Park and Dunston Hall was a tough affair also however Costessey Park did manage to edge through by the same margin as the first semi-final winning 4 games to 1 and so, the final was set. Hunstanton would take on Costessey Park for the 2018 Championship
The first game was Tom Beasley (Hunstanton) against Dylan Green (Costessey Park) with Tom completing a successful day winning by 4 holes up with three to play.

Game four was Dan Messias (Hunstanton) against past County Captain Kevin Webb (Costessey Park) however this time the spoils were halved finishing all square.
