The Skevington Trophy was keenly contested at Felixstowe Ferry on the 29th July on an untypically balmy links golf afternoon. Suffolk, Bedfordshire, Essex and Norfolk played eight matches of stroke play over 27 holes on a challenging and demanding course, that proved the perfect venue for the Norfolk County Boys Under 16's to triumph, winning the Bob Bagshaw Team Trophy for the first time. A former President of Rookery Park, when Bob sadly passed away and his family donated the competition to mirror the individual scratch trophy presented by George Skevington of Thorpeness.

Junior Organizer Norman Blanch, Team Managers Nick Macartney and Sammy Martin were proud of the players grit and determination to deliver a prestigious competition and make their mark.

A tricky venue that demanded sagacious course management when facing narrow fairways and fast greens with Essex winning overall. However, Norfolk took much from the meeting that will further develop and progress the team.

A competitive match format of Greensomes Foursomes, Myhill scoring, tested all players skill in concert with good companionship, as well as providing an opportunity for our Association and Union to unite and consolidate our shared ethos.

Ladies' County Captain Sue Heeles fielded most of the team that will represent Norfolk at the England Golf East Region County Match Week hosted by Bedfordshire at Aspley Guise later this month. County Boys Under 18 Team Manager Sammy Martin reciprocated with an amalgamation of players and officials that will compete in the SE League and Anglian League.

The halved match was a fair reflection of play and all parties welcomed the generous hospitality of the Ladies', who rewarded the endeavours with afternoon tea.

We wish all our County teams every success throughout 2019.

Norfolk U14s v Suffolk

The future is bright!

Norfolk Under 14's played at Stowmarket against Suffolk and managed by Nick Macartney. A great effort by our boys who vary in experience and size! However, some excellent individual performances and team spirit. We lost the game but not our enthusiasm and Daniel Leggett captained the team on the day. With our belief, endeavour and passion we have a wealth of talent to cultivate.

The future is looking bright as Romer is 9 years, Quinlan, Haydon and Sullivan are 10, Luke and George are 11 so we've got some youngsters coming through and don't they look smart?

2019 Coaching Initiative

The Norfolk County Golf Union has embarked on an ambitious and exciting
County Boys training programme to prepare for the season ahead. Norman
Blanch, County Junior Secretary has designed a coaching plan in concert
with Norfolk Family Golf Centre professionals Alex Beckett and Lewis
Clarke that focuses on technical skill, distance control, trackman,
practice routines, on course risk and reward management and
physical/psychological mindset towards achieving improved performance.

An overall squad of twenty four boys representing the Under 14's,16's
and 18's are taking part in twenty-one weeks of intensive teaching,
with an aspiration to hone their match play technique, reduce handicaps
and develop keen camaraderie and team spirit.
This will conclude in March allowing the boys time to adopt and impart their scholarship during the summer fixtures.

Under 12's and 14's manager Nick Macartney and recent addition to the management team Sammy Martin are supporting Norman and the programme towards a successful 2019 campaign, that profiles the player, underwrites purposeful practice in tandem with yardage, ball flight and putting control. With injury prevention in mind Pilates has been added to the schedule to further enlighten players towards good posture, flexibility and core stability.

The NCGU are also running four junior academies at Royal Norwich, King's Lynn, Bawburgh and Costessey Park with Sheringham starting one soon. They are specifically targeted towards younger boys trying to gain their first
handicaps and if anyone is interested simply contact your nearest club
to be included.

The Union has invested heavily in our future junior talent and are seeking sponsors to continue the project and would personally like to thank Robert Waugh for his donation, which has funded part of the initiative and Bawburgh Golf Club. Practice matches have been arranged to ready the Under 18's for their first competitive game against Bedfordshire and Leicestershire in the B.U.T Trophy to be played on the 17th March at Great Yarmouth and Caister GC.

More junior coaching sessions.....

Pilates and Play...developing core fitness

A squad 11 of boys attended the first session with instructor Fiona Spencer regarding their flexibility and core strength. The session was full of useful guidance and instruction specifically designed to provide an understanding of this element of development for the young golfers to enhance their enjoyment of the game.
This was followed by 18 holes of golf in some very trying conditions not least of which was the incessant rain. The morale and camaraderie was great and this bodes well for the future of Norfolk Golf.
Junior Squad Managers Sammy Martin and Nick Macartney, supported by Junior Secretary Norman Blanch were in attendance and no doubt also left with some useful knowledge of what is yet another branch of coaching aimed at producing better prepared golfers.

County Junior Golfers Get Together
