Norfolk golf duo set to become friendly rivals

Goddard is set to make his debut for England Boys and Thomas will appear in Wales’ colours.

It is an incredible achievement by the pair, who have been pupils together at Culford School over the last academic year.

The duo are now poised to become friendly rivals for a few days as their respective countries compete alongside Scotland and Ireland from August 4-6 at Monifieth Links, to the east of Dundee.

Goddard, who is this week in action at the English Men’s Amateur Championship, can’t wait to play for his country.

The Thetford Golf Club member, 17, said: “I am thrilled to have the chance to represent England Boys. It has been my ambition for a long time and I am really looking forward to the opportunity.

“Next week we'll become rivals, but only for those few hours on the course. I'll always be cheering on Harry. He's become a really good friend over the last year and I know we will always support each other regardless."

Eaton golfer Thomas will be playing in the Home Internationals for Wales Boys for the third consecutive year.

And he is delighted that Goddard has earned the chance to line up in the England side.

Thomas, 18, said: “I’ve seen all his hard work at Culford over the last year and it’s only what he deserves. I’m very, very pleased for him.

“Maybe the stars will align and we’ll play each other, which would be very nice. But either way, I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do out there.”

The two mates were in good form at Northamptonshire County Golf Club last week in the Carris Trophy – the English Boys’ Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship

Reigning Norfolk Amateur champion Goddard followed up on his recent victory in the English Amateur Under 18s with a solid tied-13th finish in the 144-strong international field.

Thomas built on an encouraging early-July display in Spain representing Wales in the European Team Championship by securing a share of 17th place in Northamptonshire.

Next week the Norfolk County Golf Union community will have all eyes on Thomas and Goddard – as well as fellow county ace Ed Featherstone, who will be pulling on national team colours for the first time when he plays for the England men’s side (see separate story).

NCGU president Stuart Goodman said: "It is fantastic that Ed and Sully are set to make their England debuts. For both of them, it's a wonderful achievement.

"We're also thrilled that Harry Thomas has once again been called up for Wales Boys.

"Everyone within Norfolk County Golf Union is extremely proud of Ed, Sully and Harry's feats and wish them the very best of luck at the Home Internationals."

Goddard and Thomas will remain in Scotland to contest the R&A Boys’ Championship – one of the most prestigious junior tournaments in world golf.

The event will take place at Gailes Links from August 10-15 and starts with two stroke play rounds before the leading 64 players continue in a match play knock out format.
